It is notably absent from the western end of the major peninsulas (S.W. Cornwall, Pembrokeshire and the Lleyn) and the Isle of Man despite the existence of suitable shores. This is one of the few single species studies commissioned by NCC on marine invertebrates. Reasons for initiating this particular investigation include reports of the species vanishing from some areas due to 'pollution', the presence of the species is easy to determine through the conspicuous reefs, an expert was on hand who could do the work and had a proven ability to be able to extract information from other workers. The report documents records of Sabellaria in Great Britain between 1918 and 1984. This survey was collated and digitised by MarLIN from Cunningham, Hawkins, Jones, Burrows (1984) as part of a contract to find information on the distribution of species and habitats in the Irish Sea as part of the Irish Sea Pilot project.
