Information from fisheries and wildlife organisations, from the literature and from questionnaires carried out in 1966, 1969, 1980 and 2002 was gathered and assembled on a river by river basis. Groups of estuaries were organised according to appropriate coastal areas and the historic and present status of Smelt in each estuary was assessed. The information from a number of estuaries is sketchy and it is uncertain if this is due to the fact that Smelt occur there rarely or that there has been little fishing to reveal the extent of the population, estuaries with historically thriving populations have better records. The quality of the data was reviewed by the authors of the report with their comments provided in the conclusions of the report. The data in the report is historic data from literature review therefore the confidence in the recording could not accurately be checked. An up to date survey of Smelt locations could determine whether reported Smelt locations are still valid.
