The site has been selected for its extensive and diverse reef habitats, range of littoral mudflat and sandflat communities, and submerged and partly submerged sea caves. It is a mandatory requirement of SACs that monitoring of a site is carried out (site condition monitoring) to identify deterioration in the condition of the feature(s) for which the cSAC has been established. The purpose of this survey was to initiate site condition monitoring of the Submerged or Partly Submerged Sea Caves feature of the Berwickshire and North Northumberland Coast cSAC. Under a Memorandum of Agreement with English Nature the survey included specified sublittoral cave locations throughout the cSAC, but the littoral component of the monitoring work was to only cover the Scottish sector of the site. The approach taken was to establish a series of relocatable profile stations within selected cave or tunnel sites, reflecting the biological and environmental diversity of the cave feature. The aim being to build on previous Berwickshire and North Northumberland cave studies, with the main emphasis on establishing re-locatable monitoring stations and gathering field data from each station at a Phase 2 level. In addition to this, neat versions of the physical measurements and the Phase 2 biological records were completed in a standard format for inclusion with the site form. This included: - tabulation of the physical measurement data; - neat scale drawings of the cave floor plan and tape datum on graph paper, together with drawings of the cross sections with the position of the tape datum indicated in each; - notes of times and heights/depths relative to sea level and to chart datum; - a drawing of each cross section where biological recording was completed, indicating the extent of each zone or biotope around the cross section with measurements, a brief description of each zone, and a species list for each zone with abundance data; - a note of any specimens taken; - initial biotope identification. Since the latest biotope classification system for Britain and Ireland was only partially available at the time of the survey, biotopes were identified using version 97.06 (Connor et al., 1997a,b), supplemented by the ‘working intertidal caves classification’ (version 07.99, MNCR, 1999). Specimens taken in the field were identified as far as possible, the record sheets amended accordingly, and any specimens requiring further work preserved and labelled. The photographs and video taken each day were reviewed, and appropriate logs maintained. Photographs were downloaded each day and stored on laptop computer, to free up camera memory for the following day’s work. Analysis and reporting - Post fieldwork: On return from fieldwork, all field data were copied or backed up, and a copy issued to SNH. Video footage taken on mini DV tape in the field, was copied for back-up purposes. A VHS (PAL) version was issued for basic review and checking against the surveyor’s records, with the digital versions also available for viewing if necessary. The biological data were reviewed for consistency, and checked against the photographic and video record, and the biotope codes finalised. The cave plans drawn up during the fieldwork were also reviewed, and then scanned and digitised for subsequent presentation. Specimens requiring further identification were identified as far as possible, and the record sheets again amended accordingly. Events in Marine Recorder = each site e.g. Petticowick Harbour.
