Features of relevance in Shetland include rare plants, caves and sand dunes. The SSMEI Biodiversity Working Group decided on the destinction of rare coastal plants (separated into sub groups of coastal, Ruppia, and terrestrial) and the SSMEI mapped the data from the original spreadsheet provided by the Shetland Biological Records Centre. The data source for sand dunes was extracted from the LCS88 (Macaulay Institute) which was then scrutinised by the SSMEI Biodiversity Working Group and new dunes added. As much of the coast is unsurveyed for caves, the OS MasterMap was used. Text was extracted from this map and converted into data points by the SSMEI pilot.
