It was created by the Scottish Sustainable Marine Environment Initiative (SSMEI) Shetland Pilot, and covers the area of sea out to 12 miles. Two sources of the data are used for this map. An initial interview with Shetland fishermen was conducted (as described in previous abstract) where areas were drawn on maps. An additional source was used from predictive mapping techniques contracted to Envision Mapping Ltd. This contractor created a broadscale seabed habitat (with biotope codes) and then cross-referenced this map with fish preference information to show the likelihood of the habitat distribution. These areas were then scrutinised by a group of 15 fishermen at a stakeholder meeting, and these areas were extracted and joined with the original fishermen information. Data set may be incomplete. Consultation with fishermen is strongly advised. Locations of fishing grounds were mapped by fishermen to show the distribution of key commercial shellfish species (brown crab, velvet crab, scallops, lobster, nephrops, buckies, and queen scallops). Data was collected for each sp., gear type, home address and month fished. Habitat areas were mapped based on a predictive seabed habitat map (biotope to MNCR guidelines). Areas for crabs and lobster were approved in a workshop by fishermen.
