Mimeographed 9pp. Data Archive for Seabed Species and Habitats (DASSH) Data Manager 01752 633102 01752 633291 Marine Biological Association of the UK, The Laboratory, Citadel Hill Plymouth PL1 2PB dassh.enquiries@mba.ac.uk distributor dataset The original data collected collected from these surveys was analysed to assess the relationship between several methods of density estimation to compare size and frequency data collected from the same sites by different workers to compare temporal variation in density and size structure of each population, and to compare these two populations with each other and populations from different geographical localities within the animal's range in the British Isles. Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s Echinus esculentus was collected extensively by divers at several sites around the British Isles including St Abbs and Skomer. As a result of this exploitation for the value of its test in the curio trade, decreases in population numbers followed and collecting has been considerably reduced since 1973 at St Abbs. ...the Skomer Voluntary Marine Reserve has since 1976 implemented a management plan which includes a policy to discourage collecting. Short surveys (a maximum of a week) have been carried out at Skomer in 1978 (Earll, 1979) and 1981 (Bishop, 1982).
