Sedimentary biotope mapping 2008-03-01 publication NATENG000277 http://www.naturalengland.org.uk As part of a contract for Natural England this report shows the results of a sedimentary biotope mapping in the Lundy Marine Protected Area in North Devon in 2007. The objective of the survey was to use the same approach the team used at Lyme Bay in 2005 but to produce a single, more representative GIS biotope map. The dataset includes an extensive GIS map showing the sedimentary biotopes of Lundy Marine Protected Area. It also contains the results of Particle Size Analysis of samples collected by grabs and bathymetry results from the multibeam backscatter data. Following a review of existing data in August 2007, 52 sampling sites were identified to the field survey. Single grab samples were taken at each site using a Mini Hamon grab (0.04m2). These samples were then processed for Particle Size Analysis using a method whereby the coarser sediment fractions of the total sample collected were sieved for particle-size at sea, then examined for fauna. This required careful control of sieve cleaning, to ensure that biota was not lost during the sieving for particle-size. After the grab samples were collected they were then sieved to separate the fauna. The samples were sieved through a 0.5mm mesh, material retained on the sieve was then transferred to a container and preserved using 10% formalin (buffered with borax to prevent dissolution of shell material). To complement existing multi-beam data on the bathymetry of the Marine Protected Area the Marine Coastguard Agency agreed to provide multibeam backscatter data to map the acoustic properties of the bed sediments. This survey was due to be completed during the autumn of 2007 with data to be provided by December.
