In connection with the proposal to site new urban development between the centers of Southampton and Portsmouth, an opportunity was given to the authors to conduct a general survey of the dominant macroscopic, epibenthic fauna of the Solent. The objective of this survey was to investigate the general composition, distribution and abundance of the major invertebrate species in the Solent area. Data was gathered from a total of 116 stations on ten separate days between the months of June and September 1971. In addition, during October of that year a 1-day survey of an oyster bed in Stanswood Bay was undertaken, involving additional 26 stations in the West Solent.was carried out from a 55-ft-side trawler using a 0.6-m wide oyster dredge with a wire mesh bag of 38 mm aperture. Two dredge tows of approximately 50 m were taken at each station. Results are based on the mean of the two samples obtained. If the two tows gave markedly different results further tows were taken. A van Veen grab of 0.1 m2 bite, weighted 20 kg of lead, was used on occasion to determine the nature of the substratum.
