Countries in the European Union must ensure that their bathing waters meets these standards. In Northern Ireland, 26 sites are formally identified under the BWD. Bathing water quality is monitored by DAERA Marine and Fisheries Division. The bathing season runs from June through to mid-September. Water quality is assessed on 19 occasions during the season and one occasion pre-season. Water samples are collected and analysed for the required microbiological standards. Bathing Water Quality information is updated weekly during the bathing season and displayed at the bathing waters and on the DAERA website. The annual data is forwarded to the Environment Agency (EA) at the end of each bathing season. The EA compiles all data from the UK and forwards on to the European Commission. Compliance against the BWD is calculated by DAERA Marine and Fisheries on a four year rolling data set. The samples are transported to the laboratory were they undergo membrane filtration, tryptone bile glucuronidase agar to allow for isolation of Escherchia Coli colonies, and Slantz and Bartley agar for the isolation of Intestinal Enterococci colonies, followed by incubation at the appropriate temperature and length of time. The laboratory holds accreditation by the United KIngdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) for the methods involved in this process.
