The team found and mapped three main Zostera beds and identified small patches of Zostera at two further locations. No detailed attempt was made to survey these beds for the presence of parasitic slime mould nor the amount of epiphyte cover. The team also carried out fourteen separate transect dives to record the percentage amount of both total maerl and also live maerl. The main maerl species present was lithothamnion calcareum. This was supplemented with a more detailed survey round a fixed datum point situated off Castle Point at the entrance to St. Mawes harbour. Large deposits of maerl were found on St. Mawes bank and also round the central datum marker often with a high percentage of this live especially in shallow water. The maerl was often found in association with the brown algae Cutleria multifida. Kevan J. The expedition lasted for one week from 27th to 31st August, 1999 and consisted of a small but dedicated team. The majority of the expedition members were experienced Scillies volunteers and the team was able to cover a considerable amount of work. During the expedition the CCC-SAC volunteers had two objectives: Map the boundaries of the Zostera marina beds along the east and west banks of Carrick Roads to the north of Falmouth harbour, St. Mawes harbout and the Percuil River. Map the boundaries of the Maerl beds on St. Mawes bank and St. Mawes Harbour.
