It also aimed to compare sediments and invertebrates between areas within the Wash. Sediment samples were taken within each 1 ha sample site. Five samples were taken and combined into a single sample that was analysed to give an average value for the site. The sediment particle size distribution was determined by wet sieving after the field study. The sediments organic content was also determined. Similarly, invertebrate samples were taken within each 1 ha site. Five pairs of cores were taken randomly and the combined contents of each pair sieved through a 0.5mm mesh. The invertebrates were sorted to species and counted individually unless particularly numerous in which case a sub-sample was counted and multiplied up. The report includes the data (i.e. invertebrate densities), maps (i.e. of sediment classes and species distributions) and a summary of the changes observed when compared with previous years.
