The monitoring programme aimed to investigate the potential for poor water quality and algal blooms. In addition, nitrogen and phosphate levels were monitored along with other environmental parameters. The Snettisham Lagoons are a priority Annex I habitat and a designated feature of the Wash and North Norfolk Coast Special Area of Conservation. The lagoons are monitored as part of a six year monitoring cycle of Special Areas of Conservation. This study was conduct to investigate the water quality of the lagoons, and to discuss the implication of this for maintaining the health of the Lagoon ecosystem. The Lagoons were monitored from April 2010 until March 2011 after which it was concluded that water quality of the lagoons does not seem to be affecting the fauna of this habitat. The survey monitored a variety of environmental parameters at set intervals. Each of the 14 sampling stations was monitored on a monthly basis between March 2010 and April 2011. This excludes August 2010, due to a sampling error, and December 2010 to January 2011, which were not sampled as responsibility for the sampling was being transferred over this time. Sampling occurred twice during March 2011, first at the beginning and then at the end of the month. The following environmental parameters were monitored during the study period; temperature, salinity, pH, water clarity and chlorophyll, dissolved oxygen, dissolved nutrients and bacterial indicators. The following samples were measured directly on site: temperature and dissolved oxygen were measured using a dissolved oxygen meter, salinity was measured using a salinity meter, pH was measured using a pH probe; as pH can be affected by temperature variation this measurement was taken using a meter with temperature compensation, water clarity was monitored via Secchi disk observations (Devlin et al, 2008). The following samples were sent for laboratory analysis: dissolved nutrients (Ammoniacal N, Nitrite, Nitrate and phosphate), bacterial indicators (Faecal coliforms and faecal streptococci) and chlorophyll. The bird survey was carried out by the RSPB as part of an ongoing monitoring programme called the wetland bird survey (WeBS). Marine Recorder survey number: MRNE01340000004F
