Work has been directed at the possible wider environmental consequences of the use of TBT-based anti-fouling paints, which were introduced in the mid-1970 and banned on small vessels in the UK in 1987. The study provides an update on the status of the epifauna, including local oyster populations, arising from a survey conducted in 1997, and complements an evaluation of recent changes in the benthic infauna. Epifauna was sampled using a standard Lowesoft 2-m beam trawl with 3 tickler chains, a 10 mm square mesh belly, a 3mm cod-end liner and chafers. At each of seven representative stations located in deeper water of the main channel system, three replicates were collected along a fixed tow length. This survey was collated by MarLIN as part of a data collation contract for species on the provisional list of Nationally Important Marine Features .
