Methods used in this survey, dredging and SCUBA diving were developed during a number of studies of the oyster population off the Hamworthy shore, Poole Harbour (Collins and Dixon, 1979; Collins 1980, 1983, 1984). Dredging was carried out from the harbour-Master's 12m stern trawler 'Rough Ryder', using a local 1.4m oyster dredge, with a 50 mm wire mesh bag. Dredging in shallow water was done by towing a lighter, 0.7 dredge. Diving was an essential part of the work, being used to determine the efficiency of the dredge and to describe the substratum.
