Funding from the Marine Natural Capital and Ecosystems Assessment (mNCEA) programme allowed a combination of ESAS-trained JNCC surveyors and volunteer surveyors to be deployed on Cefas annual PELTIC survey (PELagic ecosystem in the western English Channel and eastern CelTIC Sea) to collect Balearic shearwater data. These data will increase the evidence base and data time series for this species. This dataset was collected by JNCC staff and volunteers trained and managed by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) and stored on the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) European Seabirds at Sea (ESAS) data portal for long-term archive and management. Data was collected using the standardised ESAS survey methodology. These data were collected during ship-based surveys at sea and according to a methodology that allows to calculate georeferenced seabird densities. Standard practice further implies collecting as much information as possible on animal age, plumage and behaviour as well as observation conditions and distance to the observed individuals.
