That project developed a replicable survey methodology to map INNS on shores within SACs and SPAs. Comparison of this information with inventories of INNS in the associated marinas enabled assessment of the risk of colonisation of natural shores by INNS from nearby marinas. Natural England wished to undertake similar work in Devon and Cornwall involving three ‘Clusters’ of sites to seek to establish if a similar relationship could be found between the prevalence of INNS found within marinas and INNS found on intertidal areas nearby and more distant shores. Shores: Method -Surveys undertaken at low Spring tides. An area of low and mid-shore was allocated between the 3 surveyors. Each surveyor spent 1 hour searching the allocated area, by examining tidepools, underhangs, kelp holdfasts, artificial substrates etc. and turning boulders and cobbles. A further 15 minutes was spent on the upper shore examining boulders and the strandline. Marina/pontoons: Method - Rapid Assessment Survey (RAS) - At each marina the available floating pontoons were allocated between the 3 surveyors. Each surveyor spent 1 hour searching their allocated area, examining and scraping pontoon sides, and examining any other substrates accessible from the surface e.g. ropes, buoys, fenders, kelps etc. Temperature and salinity were recorded at surface and at 2m depth at each marina. All sites: For the 50+ target alien species and 50+ target native species presence/absence were noted and abundance estimated (using an abbreviated and adapted SACFORN scale where A=SA, F=CF, R=OR, N=N). The majority of species were determined on site. Any other potential alien species, unidentified specimens, those requiring microscopical examination for species confirmation, and specimens to substantiate significant findings were relaxed, preserved and examined later in the laboratory. The specimens were relaxed using menthol crystals and preserved in 70% IDA (Industrial Denatured Alcohol) in the field. Lab ID may involve dissection for confirmation of ID. Coordinates WGS 84 lat/long from camera GPS and Google Earth Pro aerial images. Internal QA procedure at the Marine Biological Association. Additional QA by Natural England.
