A 200m length of leaded rope was used as a transect line. The line was marked at 10m intervals. Divers swam along the line, recording the contents of two 1m square quadrats at each interval along the line. Detailed records of the presence/absence as well as abundance of macro-organisms were made within each of the quadrats. The transect line initially established by the 1982 survey stretched over the widest part of the maerl bed from just below low water mark (50degrees 09.91N, 005degrees 01.84W), out towards the Vilt buoy (50degrees 09.93N, 005degrees 02.13W) where the bank sloes down into the shipping channel. A concrete tyre (engraved with "S.Busters") was left at the shoreward end of the transect line at the end of the 1992 survey. This should allow reasonably accurate relocation of the transect line if it is repeated in the future.
