Since this would lead to the loss of oyster grounds and may possibly affect adjacent areas the Oceanography Department, Southampton University was appointed to assess the existing oyster population and potential of this region. The survey was completed before the start of the oyster fishing season (1st November) and incorporated an area enclosed by latitude references 50o 42' 12'' N/1o 59' 00''W to 50o 42' 38''N/ 2o 0' 20''W. The principal methods used to survey the area were dredging and SCUBA diving. Dredge runs were made by towing a local 1.5m oyster dredge, with a toothed blade and a 5 cm wire mesh bag, from a 12 m stern trawler. Diving was used to determine the efficiency of dredging in terms of total catch and size distribution.
