2011 Recreation and Tourism: Important areas for yachting around the Solway Firth based on anecdotal evidence.

SFCP-4_Yachting_Solway
The purpose of this dataset is to provide mapping of the distribution of Tourism and Recreation activites in the Solway Firth. This work was done under the auspices of the Scottish Coastal Forum - Mapping Data for the Local Coastal Partnsrships.
This data is not represented in any national datasets, and is local-level scale. This map shows the areas used by a local yachting club. A hand drawn map was created by the Solway Firth Partnership with the interviewee, and then digitised by Marine Atlas Consultants Ltd using GIS. The dataset has been created in vector polygons and are available in ArcGIS (.shp), MapInfo (.tab) and Google Earth (.kml) format.
The project will result in improved knowledge of recreational use for identifying conflicts in marine spatial planning. It will also be applicable to other Marine Scotland functions such as Marine Licensing which may utilise the data for considering possible resource conflicts and for Marine Conservation and Enforcement to consider possible risks or impacts in relation to marine protected site management.

The project produced maps of marine use of space and both developers and planners may be placed to make a better informed and more efficient decision if they use them as guidance during pre-application consultation and in marine planning. However, the responsible authority (e.g. Marine Scotland) will still rely on planning principles to obtain negotiated agreement among affected groups, and the maps produced are merely an informative tool.
Caveats of the data:
1. The input maps are snapshots of reality in 2011.
2. It is not the intention of this work to say these features are more important than another: in all cases, an agreement to coexist would be dependent on evidence of consultation with affected sectors to support compatibility and determine allowable consequences and mitigation (through the planning regime).
3. The developer should be prepared to consult with various stakeholders at pre-application or scoping stages and an agreement to co-exist would be dependent upon evidence of this consultation to support compatibility and determine allowable consequences and mitigation.
4. This work does not replace the need for end-user expertise in making the final decision, and should never be thought of as doing so.
