Itchen and the R. Hamble in the Solent as part of a wider study into the distribution of NNS in estuaries in southern England. The R. Itchen was surveyed from its tidal limit at Woodmill, down to where it meets Southampton Water. Natural England commissioned the work reported here to determine whether there has subsequently been any onward colonisation of INNS within the R. Itchen, and in particular of the Red-ripple bryozoan (Watersipora subatra), an invasive bryozoan which has been shown to be spreading widely in the Solent (and elsewhere) and was recorded at only one site at the mouth of the R. Itchen in 2019, subsequent to the baseline surveys in 2017. At each site the available floating pontoons were allocated between the surveyors. Each surveyor spent 30 min - 1 hour (depending on extent of pontoons) searching their allocated area, examining and scraping pontoon sides, and examining any other substrates accessible from the surface e.g. ropes, buoys, fenders, kelps etc. On shores a similar protocol was followed, examining boulders, pebbles, debris, fixed structures and kelps etc. All target NNS presence were noted and abundance estimated (using an abbreviated and adapted SACFORN scale where A=SA, F=CF, R=OR). The majority of species were determined on site. Any other potential NNS, unidentified specimens, those requiring microscopical examination for species confirmation, and specimens to substantiate significant findings were relaxed, preserved and examined later in the laboratory. The specimens were relaxed using menthol crystals and preserved in 70% ethanol in the field. Lab ID may involve dissection for confirmation of ID. Temperature and salinity were recorded at surface and at 2m depth at each marina, and on the surface on shores. Coordinates WGS 84 lat/long derived from Google Earth Pro satellite imagery.
