The objective of the study was to carry out a Phase 1 biotope survey of the Lindisfarne Special Protection Area (SPA). The report also aimed to establish a baseline for characterisation and future monitoring. For soft sediment biotopes, pre-determined transects were followed and features recorded such as the substrate, surface features and dominant species when changes occurred (i.e. in biotope). At each locations, three quadrats were used to estimate the density of conspicuous species (i.e. lugworm) and an average calculated. In addition, cores were dug and sieved and the densities of less conspicuous species recorded. On rocky shores transects (n= 2) involved estimating percentage cover of algal species at different biotopes using the SACFOR scale. Aerial photographs were also compared with previous ones from 1996, 1999 and 2006/7. The results presented include both descriptions and maps depicting the distribution of the different biotopes along the survey transects. Maps showing the presence/absence of certain species are also presented.
