At low tide the intertidal areas were walked systematically, with the exception of some soft muds at Baldoyle and Rogerstown which were scanned with binoculars. The Zostera beds at Merrion and Malahide were measured using poles and tapes. Ground truth measurements at Malahide were supplemented with colour aerial photographs (1:5000) taken on 25 August 1991. Owing to the irregular distribution of Zostera at the other sites only estimates of total areas were obtainable. The positions and areas of the beds were plotted onto 6-inch Ordnance Survey maps. Specimens of Zostera noltii and Zostera angustifolia from Malahide and Baldoyle are in the herbarium of Trinity College, Dublin. References were included for all survey areas except Sandymont Strand which has been estimated.
