Intertidal biotopes were mapped in accordance with the standardised methodology from Hiscock (1996), Conner, et al. (1997) and Wyn, et al. (2000). Target notes were made at intervals along the shore and representative photographs and video were taken. Nearshore boat survey techniques were used to cover the vast majority of the shore. A team of two surveyors obtained access to the shore, to undertake the investigation necessary to determine the biotopes present and their distribution (where possible). Loch Laxford was submitted to the European Commission as a candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC) under the European Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC). It is an excellent, and only, example of a large and shallow inlet and bay situated on the west coast of mainland Scotland. Sediment shores were 'turned over' to correctly identify species and assess abundance (using the SACFOR scale) for biotope classification. Where necessary, specimens were retained for subsequent identification. Field mapping was undertaken on OSGB 1:5,000 waterproof A2 maps, produced from OSGB 1:10,000 raster tiles. Biotope classiifcation version used was 97.06. Spatial biotope polygons, vertical shores and spot data were geographically referenced using hand-held geographic positioning system (GPS) recorders. The survey team used the OSGB (1936) datum). Target notes recorded additional information and their locations were geo-referenced using GPS and recorded on the field maps. Waterproof fields maps were worked up to produce hard copy fair maps. Field notes were transferred to MNCR Site and Littoral Habitat (Intermediate) forms. A MNCR Site form was completed for each distinct area of shore-line; these having been determined on-shore using a combination of physical and biological features such as, aspect, wave and tidal exposure and shore type. MNCR Intermediate forms were completed for biotopes of notable value, quality or uniqueness. Photographs (35mm slides), were taken during survey, showing the general area, each distinct area, specific species/ community groups, and key features for future reference. Each photograph taken was logged and geo-referenced using the GPS.
