No geological or biotope data are collected. true During February and October each year, foot surveys are conducted from the Titchwell beach at low-water. The perimeter of the bed is mapped on foot by walking around the edge of the bed with a hand-held GPS. A pair of surveyors then walk along a zig-zag transect covering the entire bed and use a Dutch wand to assess mussel coverage and patch density. The Dutch wand is a plastic ring (roughly 11cm diameter) attached to a bamboo cane that is used to assess the coverage of mussels within the bed. A plastic corer (of the same diameter as the wand) is used for collecting mussel samples from within the mussel patches. Tthe surveyors walk in a straight line along the transect line. As they walk, every two or three paces the lead surveyor places the ring of the wand on the ground. Once the ring touches the ground, the presence or absence of mussels within the ring is recorded as a hit or a miss by the second surveyor. Any mussels at all in the ring is counted as being a hit. For calculating patch density, samples of mussels are taken from within some of the rings that were determined to be hits. When a sample is collected it is taken from within the ring that produced the hit determination. A corer of the same diameter as the wand ring is used to collect the sample. To collect the sample, the wand ring is moved aside and replaced with the corer. This is gently twisted into the ground to a depth of approximately 8cm and all the mussels within the corer are then placed into a 5 litre container. Using this method, numerous small random samples will be collected from throughout the bed. The samples can be pooled from throughout the bed or divided into transects representing areas of the bed.. At the end of this distance, the samples in the container are washed using a 0.5mm sieve and stored in a labelled bag. The waypoints taken from around the perimeter of the bed are entered into MapInfo GIS, from which the area of the bed can be calculated. The transect positions taken during the survey are also entered to ensure the adequate coverage by the transects had been achieved. The hit/miss data and weights of mussels in each group from each transect are entered into an Excel spreadsheet. The total area of the bed and the diameter of the corer and ring are also entered. The spreadsheet will then automatically calculate the biomass of mussels present in the bed, the mean coverage and the mean patch density. The coverage and patch density for each individual transect will also be calculated.
