The study reports on laboratory experiments that have been conducted on byssus thread production by two species of Mussel, Mytilus edulis L. and Modiolus modiolus (L.) representing the epibyssate and endobyssate species of the Mytilidae, respectively. M. edulis L. and M. modiolus (L.) were collected from Loch Long in the Clyde Estuary. M. edulis was collected from intertidal mudflats at Arrochar and M. modiolus from 10m depth by scuba diving at Coilessan in June and July 1984.
