Samples were taken once or twice a month and most were taken on spring tides, each tow usually being started within one hour of high water to ensure there was an adequate depth of water over the entire tow. All tows were horizontal, just below the surface. The catch was preserved at once in about 5% formalin and examined in detail later. Where the numbers of medusae were high the totals were estimated by subsampling 2.6% to 5.7% of the catch, using a 4mm. bore graduated tube, and all numbers were standardised for a 15 min. hauling time. Identifications were made with aid of Russell (1953, 1970) and Edwards (1964, 1966, 1972). Nomenclature is that of the Marine Biological Association (1957).
