Data Archive for Seabed Species and Habitats (DASSH) Data Manager 01752 633102 01752 633291 Marine Biological Association of the UK, The Laboratory, Citadel Hill Plymouth PL1 2PB dassh.enquiries@mba.ac.uk distributor dataset Abstract: A benthic survey of the Stour and Orwell estuaries was carried out by Unicomarine Ltd, on behalf of Harwich Haven Authority, during the summer of 1997. 154 stations were sampled using Shipek grabs for macrobenthos and sediment characterisation. Macrobenthic samples were sieved on a 0.5mm sieve. The sediment was mostly soft with a high proportion of silt, although, coarse sediments were found mixed with fine silts at many stations. Both estuaries were species rich, with over 250 taxa recorded, the high species diversity was attributed to the low freshwater input. Cluster analysis was undertaken and several distinct biological communities noted. The faunal groups were related to depth and freshwater input. A description of the biotopes found was also made. Purpose: To provide detailed biological information about the 2 estuaries prior to the deepening of the approach channel
