The exact tidal levels corresponding to these strata varied according to the very changeable beach profile, but the boundaries were approximately at MLWS, MLWN, MTL and MHWN. On each sampling occasion, three samples were taken within each band at locations determined using random number co-ordinates. Each sample consisted of a 10x10 cm box core taken to a depth of 15 cm into the substratum, which covered the normal depth range of P. planicrurus at Aberystwyth. Each gravel core was deposited in a 15 l bucket, half full of seawater for removal to the laboratory, where the samples were preserved in unbuffered 4% foraml saline (33ppt salinity). On each occasion the temperature of the seawater was measured to the nearest 0.5oC, in water depth c.a. 1 m.were taken on twelve occasions from January to December 1986 at approximately four-weekly intervals. Sampling was always carried out during low-tide periods of spring tides, at which the entire sampling area was exposed. In January 1986 samples were taken from the upper two strata only as strong offshore winds kept the lower shore submersed. In May 1986 two sets of samples were taken, seperated by an interval of two weeks, in order to sample on spring tides of the greatest amplitude, and because informal sampling indicated a rapidly changing population at this time. No sample was taken in August, owing to severe storms which swept most of the sampling area clear of gravel. Samples were taken two weeks after the planned sampling data, leaving a sampling interval of six weeks on this occasion.
