The survey was undertaken as a precursor to the planned construction of a ferry terminal on the west coast of the Isle of Eriskay. The survey provided information on the littoral and sublittoral communities present within the Sound of Barra that might potentially be affected by the development, including the identification of rare species and sensitive biotope complexes. This information was gathered by: an in-situ assessment of intertidal habitats and communities, a subtidal diving survey, and a subtidal grab survey. Position-fixing during the grab survey was achieved using the on-board GPS (WGS64 datum). intertidal survey - Where in-situ ID was not possible, specimens were collected for later ID and preservation. Dive survey - Dive times and depths were recorded accurately from decompression computers, with the depths later corrected to chart datum. Specimens of conspicuous species (particularly those difficult to identify in-situ) were collected in plastic bags for later ID and preservation. Recording forms were completed the evening after the dives and checked for quality and legibility before survey work continued. Collected specimens were either identified in the temporary laboratory or on return to the mainland. grab survey - All samples were checked for consistency of volume and the sample rejected if insufficient sediment was retained or the sample was disturbed by having debris trapped in the jaws of the grab. All the animals removed from the samples were identified to species level and individuals counted, where practicable. If damage to the specimen, or some other reason, made it impossible to ID a specimen to the level of species then the next higher taxonomic level was used. Non-countable animals such as colonies and plants were recorded as "P". A number of samples contained very high numbers of macrobenthic fauna, which required that subsampling be carried out. Macrobenthic data were used to generate the following tables and parameters: - raw data table - number of individuals at each station - Shannon-Wiener index - Pielou's evenness index - Simpson's dominance index - Classification using group average clustering - Non-linear ordination - A ranked list of the 10 most numerically abundant taxa at each station Particle grain size analysis was carried out but is not present in the Marine Recorder record and is however detailed in the associated report.
