Additional records have come from abstraction meshes in King George V Dock in the 1980â??s and various ad hoc observations. The number of species recorded from year to year is quite variable and may include vagrants from freshwater (eg. Pike, Roach) or from offshore water (eg. Garfish). Migratory Salmon and Sea Trout returned in the mid 80â??s and are still present, though they have only very rarely been captured in routine sampling. SEPA endeavours to undertake fish friendly sampling and most fish are returned alive to the estuary. The cumulative curve of species recorded has shown a continuous upward trend. In addition to the salmonids, species which appear to have been absent in earlier years but which are now regularly observed include Sole, Dragonets, and Nilssons Pipefish (a relative of the seahorse). Of conservation interest is the discovery of migrating River Lampreys recovered in elver traps at the Tidal Weir in Glasgow in 2000. These threatened fish spend their early years in freshwater but migrate to marine waters to feed and grow before returning once again to rivers as adults to spawn.
