Marine Scotland Science uses MRV Scotia to undertake a trawl survey along of continental slope of the eastern Rockall Trough, an area is situated some 100 km to the north and west of Scotland. The continental slope separates the shallow shelf seas (< 200 m) from the deep ocean plains (> 2000 m) and supports a diverse assemblage of fish, some of which are commercially exploited such as roundnose grenadier, blue ling, black scabbard. This metadata record describes the sampling conducted in 2019. It has been running since 1998. The resultant time series data can measure faunal changes in response to stimuli such as management measures or climate change. The survey also encompasses secondary objectives such as identification and cataloguing of the mega-benthos and biological sampling for specific research projects. The survey is currently fixed-station in design and depth stratified due to the strong bathymetric patterns in species distributions and abundance. Bathymetry permitting, stations at depths of 500, 1000, 1500 and 1800 and 2000m are completed in each of several spatially resolved transects down the slope (with a variance of ± 100 m in depth to allow for the vicissitudes of trawling at great depth on a slope). Stations at 750m, and 1250m are also routinely sampled in addition however due to time constraints these are not sampled on every transect every year rather different transects are covered across years on a rolling basis. Overall therefore the survey provides an excellent representation of the slope community, although the lack of randomisation in this present design prevents estimation of absolute abundance.
