However, the main data collection is now maitaining by the Leibniz Insititue of Marine Science. The survey is now maintains and conducted by Germany and Netherlands. This record relates specifically to the remaining records held by Marine Scotland Science. The international Herring Larvae Surveys (IHLS) are carried out between September and end of January in the north-western, central, and southern North Sea and Eastern English Channel, following the spawning areas of North Sea herring (cf. Figure 1 at Survey Design). The surveys aim to provide quantitative estimates of North Sea herring larval abundance, thus targeting the very young stages of freshly hatched herring in the vicinity of the spawning areas. At the beginning of the survey series a great number of countries participated regularly, namely Denmark, Germany, England, Ireland, The Netherlands, Norway, Scotland, and Sweden. In the 1980s, the international participation declined, and since the early 1990s only The Netherlands and Germany have carried out the survey. For this reason the survey effort has been reduced by 4/5th of its original size, now concentrating on the Shetland/Orkeny, Buchan/Central North Sea and Southern North Sea/Eastern English Channel areas only. The survey is coordinated by the ICES Planning Group on Herring Surveys (PGHERS). Catch data together with specific information like haul position, survey area etc. are reported to the ICES International Herring Larvae Database annually. This database is held at the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences in Kiel, Germany. The herring larval data has been updated annually since 1972. The database contains the following information: General heading information listing the area surveyed, the survey vessel, the flow meter calibration in revolutions per meter, the type of gear and the survey dates. Location and sampling details, e.g. the date and position of the haul, the time (UTC) of the haul, the sampler and bottom depths, the hauls duration and the total number of larvae taken in the haul. The length distributions (from 5 to =24 mm) of the measured larvae. Larvae abundance estimates for the relevant length classes at each station (n/m²). Abundance of herring larvae is surveyed in specific time periods and in four different areas, following the autumn and winter spawning activity of North Sea herring from North to South (cf. Figure 1). Spawning in the Southern North Sea occurs later than in the Northern spawning grounds: The autumn spawners spawn in the North and the winter spawners in the South. The survey area is subdivided into four areas: Orkney/Shetland, Buchan, Central North Sea, Southern North Sea/Eastern English Channel. The Netherlands carries out herring larvae surveys in three areas (Figure 1).Table 1 presents the survey location, its regional code, the spawning period of the targeted sub stock, the survey period, and the nation that carries out the survey.
