Gardline Geosciences has carried out a preliminary geotechnical site investigation at the offshore wind farm site. The objective of the survey was to gather sufficient site specific geotechnical data for the purpose of preliminary design of foundations for the Windfarm project which will comprise of up to 80 wind turbines of 5 to 6 MW each. The area allocated for the windfarm covered approximately 105km2 and water depths range between 45 to 55m. A total of 33 sites were sampled by vibrocoring, whilst 36 sites were subject to CPTU testing and 2 boreholes were conducted. Operations were performed in two stages. Vibrocore sampling carried out between 22nd of July and 24th of July 2010 from the MV L’Espoir. CPT tests and boreholes were carried out between the 11th of August 2010 and 25th of October 2010 from the MV Ocean Discovery. Vibrocoring for seabed sampling for target depth of within ± 6m was done using the Aimers McLean Vibrocorer. Sea bed mode peizocone penetration testing (PCPT) was carried using a 200kN ROSON CPT rig for target depths of up to 30m depending on ground conditions. Routine index testing and classification tests were performed on the vibrocore samples for purpose of field logging and detailed testing was done ashore. All field logs were logged according to BS EN ISO 14688:2002.
