Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies Ltd (CMACS) undertook a benthic sampling survey in the Southern North Sea during November/December 2004 and April/May 2005 to inform the envirnomental impact assessment for the proposed Greater Gabbard Offshore Wind Farm. There was a suite of offshore ecological survey work comprising drop down camera survey, grab sampling and beam and otter trawling which together provide a benthic ecological characterisation of the proposed development site.

Grab sampling was planned for August/September 2004 but due to a prolonged spell of unfavourable weather, did not take place until November of that year. Forty-eight of the 76 sites, including 6 triplicate sample sites, were successfully sampled in and around the wind farm array. Grab sampling was carried out as planned in April/May 2005 and 49 of the 62 sites were sampled successfully.
The survey vessel was positioned to within 10m of the target point using DGPS and the actual sample position was recorded with sub-2 metre accuracy.
