The offshore wind farm consists of 152 Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs) with a gross nameplate capacity of approximately 504MW. The project is now fully operational and the construction was completed in September 2012. GGOWL signed up CT Offshore to conduct survey of the inter array cables. Water depths along the CTO scope of work vary between approx. 22 (LAT) at the point closest to the shore and 32m (LAT) furthest south west. Inspection of seabed bathymetry along the route of all 152 IA cable routes extending to 50m either side of each cable (i.e. 100m wide survey centred on cable). The cable route surveys should identify any exposed or free spanning sections of cable, any cable loops emergent from the seabed and the presence and location of any installed cable protection systems. Where possible, the IA cable surveys should cover the full span of the cable up to and including the cable monopile entry point and should illustrate exposed and free spanning cable in the vicinity of the monopiles. Where it is not possible to survey up to the monopole, the cable survey should extend as close to the structure as is deemed safe to do so. The survey must quantify the seabed position relative to lowest astronomical tide (LAT) thereby enabling any seabed movements relative to seabed position in 2009 to be quantified. The survey of the inter array cables shall include survey of the OSP’s (IGSUB and GASUB). Multibeam Survey is conducted to achieve the above results. The system’s depth capability is limited to 500m. The system’s range resolution is 1.25 cm. The transducer head can be installed on a vessel of opportunity as an-over-the-side mount on a rigged pole and plate assembly. The acoustic centre that is X, Y, Z of the subsurface unit is used as the reference position origin for the survey. Multibeam Bathymetry Collection System, EIVA Navi Scan: Essentially a computer with several serial ports, this is a dedicated data collection system that combines the data from the onboard sensors for the vessel’s heave, roll, pitch heading and position, time tagging them for post processing. The Navi Scan software records the raw data in its own binary format with the file extension *.SBD. For post processing, raw data files can be exported in a number of different formats depending on the type of multibeam software used for editing the data. Navigation system: This is required to provide real-time information to the vessel helmsman for navigating along the planned track lines of the survey. This is accomplished using EIVA Navi Pac software. A Navi Pac translation of the NMEA turns the output from the mobile GPS receiver into a graphical plot of the vessel’s movements. Heading Sensor: A heading sensor is required to measure the orientation of the vessel. The system used is a TSS Meridian Gyro compass. This provides heading data to .01 of a degree that is logged by the Navi Scan. The heading is the output from the Meridian Gyro to the motion sensor. On installation, the gyro sensor is aligned with the centre line of the survey vessel. Motion Sensor: This is essential to correct the swath data for vessel movement namely heave, pitch and roll. The unit used is a TSS DMS-05 motion reference unit. Once installed, the sensor requires that the offsets of its reference frame of origin is measured with respect to the survey origin, in this case, the acoustic centre of the multibeam system, and inserted in the Navi Scan program setup system offsets. Multibeam Bathymetry Data Editor: Once collected, multibeam data requires editing and cleaning before a presentation of data can be considered. This is accomplished with the “Navi Edit”, “Navi model” and the “Navi Plot” software from EIVA. Sound velocity Profile: The swath from multibeam echo is influenced by the speed of sound through water. The speed of sound depends on the salinity and the temperature in the water. The SVP is used to determine these variables. Fixed Sound Velocity Sensor – mounted on MBES head and used to measure and corrected in real-time for speed of sound Tidal reductions: All bathymetric data acquired during the survey are reduced to chart datum based on tidal corrections provided online by the RTG GPS height.
