It contains monthly and monthly climatology maps of internal waves (IW) density distribution within the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) region. It also includes seasonal, 6-month and annual variability maps of internal waves. The maps were generated by automatic processing of the ENVISAT Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) data archive over the period from Oct. 2006 to Apr. 2012 that included over 3,400 ASAR images covering the area of interest. The netCDF4 files can be found in “gis” directory. The composite maps are stored in “monthly” subdirectory and climatology maps are located in “clim_monthly” subdirectory. Variability maps are located in “var_seasonal”, “var_6month” and “var_yearly” subdirectories. The directory “plots” contains annotated views of internal wave maps in PNG format. PNG maps of IW climatology follow the name pattern “clim_map_INTERVAL_occurence _TYPE.png”, where INTERVAL is the time interval in months or years, TYPE is “_stretch003” for the map dynamic range stretched from 0 to 0.003. TYPE is “stretch003_bath” for the stretched maps and overlaid bathymetry. The bathymetry equal depth lines are colour-coded as: cyan – 25 meter depth, orange – 50 meters, white – 100 meters, yellow – 150 meters, then these colours repeat for the depths 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 meters. Monthly density maps follow the pattern “iw_map_INTERVAL_occurrence_TYPE.png”. Variability maps use the pattern “var_map_INTERVAL_variability_TYPE.png”.
