The objective of the survey was to to collect 14 days data on vessel movements in the area during the winter period of 2011. The survey was conducted from the National Coastwatch Institution Shoreham Station situated at the port entrance. The first period began on the afternoon of Monday 17th January 2011 and concluded on the afternoon of Monday 31st January 2011. The second period began on 16th July 2011 and was concluded on 30th July 2011 The primary objective of the survey was to identify and validate the routeing of vessels and the level of vessel activity in and around the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm site. This was achieved by recording in real-time the positions of vessels within range of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver and ARPA radar as well as being supplemented by observation of vessels within visual range to obtain information on type and size where the information was not available from AIS.
