The objective of this survey is the assessment of any long-term changes in the benthic ecology as a result of the construction and subsequent operation of the offshore wind farm. A baseline benthic survey was carried out in 2005 (MESL). To allow for a full comparison between survey campaigns, benthic grab sampling stations were selected to mirror those surveyed during the first post-construction survey in 2012, in locations unaffected by infrastructure. Survey stations were examined utilising a drop-down video (DDV) camera system to verify the physical nature of the seafloor and collect information on the epibenthic biology of the area. Grabs were taken in areas identified as suitable by the DDV footage. In areas of rocky ground or Sabellaria aggregations, no grab sampling was undertaken. Benthic grab sampling followed Procedural Guidance No. 3-9 of the JNCC Marine Monitoring Handbook (Thomas, 2001) and Judd (2011) guidelines. Infauna and sediment samples were taken with a 0.1m mini-Hamon grab.The time and location of each grab was recorded using a handheld GPS, proofed with the vessels GPS. Data was analysed alongside all previously collected comparable data in order to evaluate the change over time from baseline to the current post-construction phase. This entailed: Infauna analysed to species level; PSA (and TOC) with comparable fractionation to that undertaken during baseline and 2012; Video and still images to be reviewed, processed and analysed in accordance with national guidelines; Turner et al., (2016), standards for analysis in Visual Seabed Surveys (BS EN 16260:2012) and Coggan et al., (2007); Reefiness assessment for any Sabellaria aggregations observed during the DDV survey (Hendrick and Foster-Smith, 2006); and Statistical analysis, e.g. via Plymouth Routines in Marine Ecological Research (PRIMER) v6 (Clarke and Warwick, 2001) to explore the data and provide comparative analysis between periods and survey occurrences. This analysis was also used to classify the communities and biotopes present according to the Marine Habitat Classification (Connor et al., 2004). Classification was supported by use of JNCC comparative tables and guidance. All data processing and statistical analysis was undertaken using Microsoft Excel and the statistical package Plymouth Routines In Marine Ecological Research (PRIMER) v6 (Clarke and Warwick, 2001). The report cites chart datum (equivalent to Lowest Astronomical Tide), however depths listed in the results are not obviously referenced.
