Entec was subcontracted to undertake each survey. Between October 2010 and September 2011 a series of surveys were undertaken to determine the type and distribution of fish and commercial shellfish species in and around the site of the proposed offshore wind farm. Three types of survey were performed; trawl surveys using an otter trawl, set net surveys using gill nets, and potting surveys using parlour pots. The majority of fishing effort in the inshore and southern area of the proposed demonstration site is directed towards potting for edible crabs (Cancer pagurus) and common lobsters (Homarus gammarus), as well as static netting for cod (Gadus morhua) and other whitefish in winter, and drift nets for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and sea trout (Salmo trutta var trutta) in the summer months. Further offshore in the northern half of the demonstration site, otter trawling for Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus - known locally as prawns, and from hereon referred to as Nephrops) and whitefish is the main fishery.
