There are about 300 different genera. Some species can be very long and form kelp forests. Forests can develop in shallow water which is rich in nutrients below 20 degrees in temperature. These forests provide a habitat to a wide range of species. Kelp has a wide range of commercial uses from plant fertiliser to food colourings. It is harvested commercially in many areas around the world, including Orkney. The rapid growth rate reduces the impact this harvesting has on the forests. This report discusses some of the practical and environmental issues of clearing the seabed of kelp during the installation of Oyster devices. For the installation of 3 devices for Oyster2 a relatively small area will need to be cleared. The area needing to be cleared is not the densly establish kelp forest. Seabed surveys will be need to inform how much kelp needs to be cleared from the seabed. Practically, the most effective method of clearing the seabed is using divers, assuming the area is not densly populated. However, there are other methods involving boats and cutters. Leaving the kelp in the water will have reduce the environmental waste on land. However, as the area required to be cleared increases with the number of devices being installed the most efficient method for clearance may no longer be divers. Considerations of how large amounts of weed would be transported and how it was disposed of on land.
