The surveys were designed to provide baseline information on the distribution and abundance of seabirds and marine mammals, supporting regional density and distribution modelling and understanding of potential overlap with floating offshore wind development in the Celtic Sea. The surveys were undertaken as part of the Cornwall FLOW Accelerator (CFA) project, led by Celtic Sea Power Limited in partnership with the University of Exeter, University of Plymouth, and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (OREC). The CFA project was funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Surveys used a transect-based high-resolution digital aerial survey method, with observations georeferenced and internally quality assured. Surveys used a transect-based method with APEM’s high-resolution digital camera system mounted in a twin-engine aircraft. Imagery was collected at approximately 1,700 ft altitude and 120 knots, with a ground sample distance of approximately 2 cm and greater than 5% coverage of the sea surface. Images were analysed to identify and enumerate birds and marine mammals to species level where possible. Observations were georeferenced and subjected to APEM internal quality assurance, including checks for missed targets and species identification. The supplied observation data represent raw counts and have not been extrapolated to abundance estimates.
