The study was carried out by Natural Power Consultants and it describes the existing environment with regard to Marine mammals, basking shark and turtles and Ornithology, and assesses the potential impacts of the Offshore Development area of the proposed Rhiannon Wind Farm (RWF). Chapter 11 - Marine mammals, basking shark and turtles is closely linked to Chapter 7 Physical processes; Chapter 8 Nature conservation; Chapter 9 Benthic ecology; Chapter 10 Fish ecology; and Chapter 14 Shipping and navigation of the Stage 2 Preliminary Environmental Information (Stage 2 PEI) and should be read in conjunction with Appendix 11.1 Boat-based survey analysis; Appendix 11.2 Baseline assessment figures; Appendix 11.3 Piling impact assessment figures; Appendix 11.4 Long term assessment using PVAs; Appendix 11.5 Final report on aerial surveys from April 2012-March 2013 - Irish Sea Zone (ISZ), Rhiannon Wind Farm (RFW) and NE Potential Development Area (NE PDA); Appendix 11. 6 Supplementary information for CIA methodology; Chapter 11 describes the distribution and abundance of marine mammals, basking sharks and turtles in the Irish Sea, including the proposed Offshore Development area. It then presents an assessment of the potential impacts of the proposed development in relation to marine mammals, basking sharks and turtles. Individual transects varied in length from 9.1km to 54.2km, producing a total transect route of 581.9km in length. Two methods of collecting data were employed; visual sightings and acoustic detections. Full details of the methodology can be found in the ISZ Marine Mammal Technical Report (Celtic Array 2011). 12 digital video aerial surveys were carried out on a monthly basis from April 2012 to April 2013. Strip transects were flown at 1.5km spacing across the Site and at 3km spacing across the ISZ. High definition digital video cameras attached to an aeroplane were used to capture video images of marine mammals and other megafauna at or near the sea surface. Video images were later analysed to identify the species and numbers of individuals present within the strips (Technical Appendix 11.5 Final report on aerial surveys from April 2012-March 2013 – ISZ, RWF and NE PDA). Further information can be found in Technical Appendix 11.2, Technical Appendix 11.5 Chapter 12 Ornithology Data was collected from the boat-based ornithological survey programme started in March 2010 and finished in April 2012 using a high-specification research vessel was chartered for predefined time blocks over the two-year survey period. The Irish Sea Zone was sampled into seventeen line transects orientated from north east to south west, with a line spacing of 3.7 km. When conditions ameliorated and time allowed, any missing transects were then surveyed. Twelve high definition digital video aerial surveys was undertaken from April 2012 to March 2013.
