This is because the development could potentially have impacts upon two Special Protection Areas and, under the 1994 Habitat Regulations; Appropriate Assessments are likely to be required. Also, as they are European Protected Species, any potential impact upon cetaceans needs to be considered. As part of Aquamarine’s commitment to continuous improvement and following feedback from SNH this document reviews the existing programme of seabird and cetacean monitoring at Marwick Head in the light of the experience to date. It describes how the data collected to date will be analysed to meet the requirements of EIA and Appropriate Assessment and proposes further improvements to the existing methodologies to even better meet these requirements. Given the sensitive location of the proposed development, an extensive programme of survey and monitoring is proposed. Brough Head Wave Farm Limited (BHWFL) also commissioned one complete year of marine wildlife surveys of its Brough Head Wave Farm site. The site is located along the north-west coast of Orkney Mainland where it holds an Agreement for Lease (AfL) with the Crown Estate (Figure 1). Monthly shore-based surveys of seabirds and marine mammals using the AfL area have been conducted since April 2011 and this report (and subsequent additions) aim to characterise the marine wildlife interest of the Brough Head Wave Farm site. Birds on the water will be assigned to one of 5 distance bands with respect to perpendicular distance from the transect line: Band A (0- 50m), Band B (50-100 m), Band C (100-200 m), Band D (200-300 m) and Band E (300 m+ outside the transect). All birds recorded on the water will be assigned to one of these five distance bands. This will allow the data to be corrected for lower probabilities of detection at greater distances from the observer using distance sampling (Buckland et al. 2001) To estimate the density of flying birds within the transect, a regular snapshot count of birds flying over the transect and within 300m distance ahead of the ship will be performed (Tasker et al. 1984) In addition, the age, plumage details and behaviour of birds will be recorded where possible, with a particular emphasis on recording behaviour where this is possible. Environmental conditions (wind direction and force, sea-state, swell height, visibility, glare, cloud cover and rain or fog) will be recorded every 15 minutes. Two observers will be on watch at all times to reduce variation between observers, as recommended by Camphuysen et al. (2004). The primary observer will call out birds as he/she sees them, while the second observer will record the data on the survey forms as well as pointing out any birds that might have been missed. To prevent observer fatigue and ensure high quality data three observers will be on board at all times, and swap roles through the day, so that each observer can have regular breaks from surveying. All observers will be experienced, accredited ESAS observers.
