This was needed in order to evalutate the potential impacts of Offshore Wind Farms on these species which requires not only the number of birds present but also their flight patterns. Radar recordings were backed up by visual observations, particulary around dawn and dusk. Observations were made during two periods of 6 days each, from 22nd February to 3rd March and from 11th March to 18th March, all in 2006. Flight directions were recorded by radar, in order to evaluate movements through and around the three wind farm sites. A vertical radar was used to quantify flight altitudes and fluxes (i.e. flight intensities) at different altitude bands. In addition, visual observations were carried out to record the exact numbers and species of birds during daylight hours, with an emphasis on the periods around dawn and dusk, as well as determining behaviour of birds during daytime. In order to understand the flight movements of scoters in the area, observations started out close to the main inshore aggregation, and were continued further offshore at larger distances from this main inshore area. Together, these observations covered both the main aggregation and the three wind farm sites.
