Any obvious noise present in the data was removed and the remaining data were corrected for variations in positioning quality. Following processing, bathymetric sounding standard deviation values were also assessed to ensure that data were consistent and no erroneous soundings were present. From analysis of the bathymetric difference calculation between the 2013 and 2014 surveys; on regions of flat seabed where no visible effects from construction or sand wave migration were evident, vertical differences were typically less than less than 0.15 m. This showed that the positioning of the two datasets was good and the processing methodology was correct. The sidescan sonar data were of good quality and fit for purpose. Detection of small objects such as fishing gear pots (less than 0.3 m in length), the ropes connecting them (less than 0.1 m in diameter) and cable exposures was possible throughout the main site. Sidescan sonar was not collected along the full transit route and export cable corridor; this was due to depth limitation in the nearshore, poor weather, and hazardous conditions at night. Where sidescan sonar data was not available, multibeam backscatter data was used for interpretation. This was adequate, however objects less than 0.5m in length were not able to be resolved and could not be measured as accurately as was possible with the sidescan dataset.
