Year 1 tag fitment (2023) was unsuccessful but trial deployments were undertaken on the Marinus buoy and geese at WWT Slimbridge. 5 solar powered rings were fitted by RSPB in June 2024 and data was received from these by an array of 4 time of arrival (TDoA) gateways. These were installed around the site at The Range, RSPB South Stack visitor centre, Elins Tower and South Stack lighthouse owned by Trinity House which was arranged by contract. This is often the case though, but the challenges were not insurmountable as was proved. With the complications caused by non-fitment in the first year of the project and then gateway breakdowns there were clearly major lessons learnt. The engineering of the Mk1 leg rings relied on measurement of dead birds but with avian influenza prevalent it was very difficult to get the opportunity to work with live seabirds at this time. Also to prepare for anything as the exposed nature of the MDZ site did also cause infrastructure problems and the gateways lost connection to the TTN on a number of occasions, due to storms and power cuts. Other occasions such as the portable appliance testing were more difficult to identify remotely. The distance to the site of the project lead and the limited time he had available was an issue with a day of travel needed each way for any site visits.
