During the surveys each surveyor scans the water across 90º on his/her side of the boat. All birds on the water are recorded throughout the survey time, with each transect focusing on birds under 300m away from the vessel. Each observation is allocated to one of four distance bands measured perpendicular to the transect line. During periods of lower bird activity, secondary records of birds over 300m away should be noted. Two months’ surveys (February 2010 and October 2010) were missed due to poor weather conditions, however additional surveys were undertaken in February and October 2011 to make up for these data gaps on the advice of Natural England (NE). Each survey consisted of a series of parallel transects running north to south across the Zone 7 and The Site (plus 4km buffer) spaced approximately 2km apart.
