A transect survey method was used consistent with that recommended in Camphuysen et al. (2004). Aerial surveys also follow a standard transect pattern. A high-winged, twinengined (Partenavia) aircraft is used which enables two observers to simultaneously record the species, number and distance from the aircraft (within defined distance bands) birds observed on either side of the aircraft. As with boat surveys observations are time-logged allowing positions to be inferred subsequently from a GPS track of the flight path.
