The aim of the survey was to record all the commercial fishing vessels and gears observed within the cable corridor. A total of 25 vessels were observed in the survey area undertaking various activities, from commercial fishing, private angling and charter angling. In total 126 gear markers were observed in the survey area. The majority of the gear observed was marked with industrial drums. Two high density gear marker aggregations were recorded to the north of the area known as Lynn Deeps and to the north of the North Well Bell. In total the transect lines covered 119 n.miles and were approximately 100 metres apart. The location of the transect lines are shown overleaf in Figure 3.2. The position of the survey vessel was tracked at all times and the location of any gear markers and vessels observed were recorded using a GPS (Garmin GPSMap 278). The vessel steamed along each transect at 4 to 5 knots. All gear markers within 50 m either side of the transect lines had their coordinates recorded. Upon sighting a gear marker the vessel slowed and pulled up alongside the gear marker, a photograph was then taken and a description noted. Vessels observed within the vicinity of the survey area had their bearing and estimated distance from the survey vessel noted, as well as their photograph taken where possible.
