Two acoustic instruments were deployed in the Inner Sound for 30 days. A Nortek 600 kHz Acoustic Wave And Current Profiler (AWAC) was used to produce a current profile of the whole water column and assess the wave climate. An RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) Workhorse was used to gather high resolution turbulence data in the section of the water column where turbines will be operating. The two acoustic profilers were deployed in bespoke seabed frames that are designed to be low profile, trawl resistant and to keep the instruments clear of the seabed. The initial deployment in April 2011 was aborted after difficulties with the high current speeds in the Inner Sound. After redesigning the moorings, EMU attempted a second deployment on the 21st June 2011. This deployment was successful and data were recovered from both profilers. The second attempt was successful and robust data sets were acquired by both instruments, the flows recorded exceeded 4.5 ms and analysis of the data indicated that they could exceed 5 ms. The data from both instruments showed a high level of correlation further supporting the robust nature of the data sets. The project was exceptionally challenging however it has proved that data can be collected in these extreme conditions.
